summertime and the livin’ ain’t easy

April 23, 2007 · 17 Comments

it was hot today in seoul – may have even reached 20 degrees at some point. well, i really have no idea what 20 degrees feels like. my brain still computes in fahrenheit. but let’s just say it was warm enough to worry about pit stains this afternoon.

wtf? it isn’t even may yet and i’m already bracing myself for summer weather. the magnolias and cherry blossoms have shed their petals too soon and i’ve worn my new spring jacket only about 7 times. i feel like i’ve been frackin’ robbed of spring. if seasons were dishes in a restaurant, i wish i could send back the summer entree and ask for extra helpings of spring and fall. winter’s ok too but hot weather and humidity leave a bad taste in my moutn, not to mention, a stank in my shoes. (um, was that an overshare?)

i wish i could hibernate during the summer. wake me up when the mercury dips below 20.

I know….it was freezing in NY until this week; now it’s already about 85 degrees and HOT. Fall and spring exist no longer…we’re down to two seasons now…

I’m not looking forward to that feeling of a hot wet blanket being thrown around you every time you go, well I was going to say outdoors, but really… anywhere …. ugh

Not sure if you caught it, but Amateur Gourmet and Kristen from Give Me Some Food recently featured their meal at Chez Panisse.

NY has finally reached up to 85 degrees over the weekend and today.. I just couldn’t believe I was wearing my summer clothes when I just did my laundry and found sweaters and whatnot. I can already feel how hot this summer will be like.

When I think of Seoul in the summer…I think “hot town, summer in the city, back of my neck gettin dirty and gritty” (Anyone? Lovin Spoonful? Anyone?) I also remember practically melting in my Calvin Kim suit and my Ralph Faux-ren tie. Damn, I gotta stop shopping in Itaewon.

BTW, I ditched the “Special K” moniker. I don’t want my kids calling me that when I’m old and grey.

not too crazy hot in LA….yet, thank goodness.

definitely would prefer dry heat as opposed to sticky, you hair is never gonna dry out of the shower hell.

got a question for you as well. and sorry about the long post.

does seoul have air conditioning down in the subways?

i remember being in manhattan in the middle of hell humidity summer day as a tourist circa ‘94.

during rush hour in that subway hell (it was seriously like 120F down there and humid, stinky, i could feel myself breathing the humid heat….just bad), i literally look over at my native NY friend and ask him if the air condition is broken or something.

all the suits/commuters all around me gave me that ‘look’.

the you dumb motherf#cker, go back to California, stupid ass, what rock are you living under, oh someone turned the switch off let me go turn it back on look.

and that special k moniker. totally funny to me and brings back memories. there was a host family in france who had a mentally disabled kid. his name was kevin. but the american students called him speciak k.

    SK~calvin kim? i think i know him from nyc…

i actually preferred special k. so many references: the cereal, the drug, james’ retard ami.

when i have kids, they will be instructed to call me “suddenly mom.”

james~”does seoul have air conditioning down in the subways?”

are you shitting me? i am now giving that “look.”

it’s like a meat locker inside the subway cars but out on the platform, you’re SOL. but at least it doesn’t smell like urine.

    1) can’t lie – i think the stinky feet comment was… – not quite tmFi – but borderline tmi…;) jk lol

    2) haha, funny comment james…that “look” – yup, the ac “on”-switch is on the OTHER side of the tracks – jump down and find it “look”? lol

    3) i’m NOT looking forward to getting to korea in the middle of the unbearable heat waves (i arrive July 25th) -_-;;

    4) 팥빙수 보여주세요~ ;) we’ll deliciously pretend to eat it off your blog ^^

    Hi Susan,

My name is Grace and I’m writing from Singapore. Apologies for using your personal blog for this purpose but I’ve been unable to contact you otherwise. I am a research writer for a production house in Singapore and we’re currently doing some research on Korean food – mainly Seoul. We’re seeking a local food expert and I believe that we’ll be able to work together. It’ll be great if you could contact me at gracechay@ochrepictures.com. Thanks Susan, I hope the weather will be better soon.

the weather today was as close to perfect as you can get in seoul. clear blue sky, plenty of sun and a gentle breeze to carry the scent of lilacs. just gorgeous.
