now that ladies in korea have makeup and plastic surgery to fix their faces, they have to make sure they look just as good going as they do coming. the chosun ilbo says:
“Now, in a survey of 3,511 consumers by G-market, some 2,949 respondents or 84 percent said they are concerned about how they look from behind, and 1,299 or 37 percent said they feel confident about their back. For those who do, clothes and shoes that show off the back to its best advantage are widely available.”“If your hips are nothing much to write home about, don‘t worry, just fake it. Hip pads which add volume to a scrawny pelvis are available. Hipskorea.co.ltd, a hip pad merchandiser, reportedly earns W50 million(US$1=W928) a month. Sales are smooth mostly thanks to word of mouth. But beware: hip pads they can be spotted through thin clothes.”
i’m trying to imagine the conversation in which a woman recommends the hip pads to her friends:
friend: 언니, 뒷 모습이 정말 예쁘다! 난 빼짝 말라서 고민이야…(unni, you look so good from behind. i hate being so skinny…)
j. roh: 나도 엉덩이 없었는데 이제 걱정 안 해도 돼. (i didn’t have any junk in the trunk either but now i don’t have to worry.)
friend: 어떻게 했는데? (what’d you do?)
j. roh: 난 히프패드를 사용하거든. (i use hip pads.)
friend: 히프패드라니? (hip pads?)
j. roh: 응. 폼 조각을 팬티 속에 쑥~ 넣어서 나 같은 빵빵한 엉덩이를 만들 수 있당! (yup. just slip two foam cups into your panties and you can have a bodonka-donk booty like mine!)
friend: 어머! 나도 할래!! (wow! i wanna try it!!)
i checked out the hipskorea web site and dozens of women uploaded their before and after shots. here’s one bootilicious convert:

all you olive oyls looking for the perfect hourglass shape can stuff your bras and your booties, too!

I never understood why Korean always use “hips” when they mean the butt…like when the phrase “hip up” was used to talk about getting the butt nice and perky….

i think it’s because saying that you want a nice ass is too vulgar. it’s more acceptable to say you want shapely hips.
not entirely sure, tho. i could just be talking outta my ass…er, hips…

Hahaha!!! Loving your posts…
How I wish I could live in Korea and experience these for myself T_T Are you Asian? Is discrimination of females still very prevalent?
I’ve got nice perky ‘hips’… I don’t need them ‘hip pads’

hi sierra~thanks! glad you’re enjoying the blog. to answer your questions, yes, i am korean-american and yes, it seems that gender roles are more clearly defined here. for example, women are “supposed to” cook the meals, wash the dishes, take out the garbage, handle the finances and be dutiful to their husband’s family. this makes it especially difficult if , like me, you’ve grown up in the west all your life and are used to a different standard.

=.= I noticed that you were Korean-American after reading further… hehe! Nice!!! I’m Chinese, from Malaysia… and the gender roles here aren’t so defined anymore… at least not in my state. Women are pretty empowered here in Malaysia…
I get the whole ‘woman take care of home thing’ that’s going on in Korea… but is it as big a deal as people make it out to be? I’m sure not every woman leads that kind of life right? Aren’t there lots of career women running around these days? ^_^ I guess you’re one of the lucky ones… that your husband doesn’t treat you like a maid and breeding machine… I wonder how I’d fare in Korea
If you ever read my blog, please don’t laugh at my fangirl idealisms of Korea… hehe… it’s fiction… I embellished [quote Carrie of SATC]
